The Senate impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona will most likely be finished by March 23, lead prosecutor Rep. Niel Tupas Jr. said yesterday.
“We hope to finish the trial before our Holy Week adjournment. By then, we also hope that the Senate would have already made a decision,” he said in a television interview.

Senator-judges will decide before the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona resumes Monday afternoon whether to subpoena documents supposedly pertaining to his bank accounts in at least two Philippine banks.
The senators are also expected to discuss whether they would summon several associate justices of the Supreme Court to testify on the tribunal’s flip-flopping on certain cases.

Solicitor General Jose Anselmo Cadiz has resigned, two Cabinet officials confirmed late on Sunday. Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said Cadiz quit last Friday. "Yes, he personally tendered his resignation to the President last Friday," she said.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda also confirmed that Cadiz resigned. Malacañang is expected to make an official announcement on Monday regarding the resignation.

Authorities claimed Sunday they now have in their hands evidence proving that the military had neutralized high-value targets in last week’s air attack in Sulu.
Philippine officials had reported the operation netted, among others, Malaysian terrorist Zulkipli bin-Abdul Hir Marwan, the Jema-ah Islamiyah terrorist more known just as “Marwan,” and a founder of the local Abu Sayyay Group, “Doc Abu.”

THE biggest group of Filipino and Chinese businessmen in the Philippines has warned the Senate impeachment court to think twice before it decides to allow the opening of bank records of Chief Justice Renato Corona because it may lead to a bank run and loss of trust in the banking system.
The Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) over the weekend asked senators to exercise caution before granting the request of the House prosecution to subpoena the bank documents of the Chief Justice.

Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares urged Malacañang yesterday to include in its version of the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill the disclosure of the amount and use of pork barrel funds lawmakers are receiving every year.
Colmenares said he did not think that senators and congressmen would object to disclosing details about their funds since they are even putting their names and images on billboards that announce their earmarked projects.

President-turned-Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s request to visit the wake of her brother-inlaw, Negros Occidental Rep. Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo, has earned the backing of Catholic prelates.
Bishop Jose Oliveros of the Diocese of Malolos said the Mrs. Arroyo should be allowed to visit the wake of the late congressman for “humanitarian and Christian reasons.”

It is still premature to predict the outcome of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona since seven more Articles of Impeachment will be presented, Malacanag deputy spokesman Abigail Valte said on Sunday.
To speculate that Corona would be acquitted based on the poor performance of the prosecution is not right, Valte said during an interview with state-run radio dzRB.
