BIR waives penalties for late electronic tax filers

Bureau of Internal RevenueThe Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has waived the penalties imposed against tens of thousands of electronic tax (e-Tax) filers for their failure to beat the April 15 deadline in filing their income tax returns (ITRs) due to the breakdown in the agency’s computer system.

The waiver was issued in Revenue Memorandum Circular No. 28-2014 signed by BIR Officer-in-Charge and Revenue Deputy Commissioner for Operations Nelson M. Aspe.

meralcoThe Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) cannot automatically collect higher rates to reflect the sharp rise in December generation charge even after a Supreme Court temporary restraining order (TRO) on the planned adjustment lapses on April 22 and gets no extension.

Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla and Meralco head of utility economics Larry Fernandez made this clear as the 60-day TRO on the charging of higher rates in December 2013 and last January is set to expire on Tuesday.

meralcoThe Supreme Court (SC) was asked yesterday to indefinitely extend its temporary restraining order (TRO) that stopped the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) from enforcing its P4.15 per kilowatt-hour power rate increase that was provisionally approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on December 9, 2013.

In a petition, Makabayan bloc congressmen said that unless the TRO is extended, the power distributor will be allowed to collect its assailed rate increase that will cause “grave and irreparable injury to millions of Meralco consumers and those affected by the erroneous rate hike.”
